HEMA Half Armoured Melee - 2 vs 3
A bit of a 16th century style brawl among soldiers of the day. This was an impromptu bit of melee as a number of us had brought partial armours in. Note hte term half armour usually refers to a combinatin of torso and head armour, and sometimes a little more such as the tassets and spaulders which two of us wear. That armour set of the Aegis armour set sold by Swordshop.ca.
The swords are mostly heavy type sideswords or early/military rapiers commonly used by both soldiers and civilians throughout the era. As the weapons in use could not do damage through the armoor, the armoured areas are considered not scoring, and that includes the burgonet type mask overlays.

A fun little experiment to see how a javelin or thrown spear/partizan could work in a close in fight. We did not include backup weapons to allow rapid resets of j...

    • @AcademyofHistoricalFencing
      @AcademyofHistoricalFencing 8 годин тому

      KInd of impossible to really say because you have to define best at what and in what circumstances, and ecery design choice on a sword compromises it in another way. The British 1821/45 heavy cavalry sword and 1896 that followed it are probably up there as some of the best all rounders, though many nations made something similar. The most successful design ever was the three bar seen on 1821 British light cavalry sabres, and again on many other nations, and you could well argue they are one of the best ever, have protection without being bulky or heavy, reach and good durability. It's really a tough call though.

    Hey there welcome back we really missed you! I have a question about covering the line of attack if you don’t mind. How do you do that exactly? By aiming at the opponent’s weapon or weapon arm when you’re attacking and counterattacking? For instance, if I were to aim at my opponent’s head, I would follow through with my attack toward the opponent’s weapon or weapon arm? Is this how you cover the line of attack?

    • @AcademyofHistoricalFencing
      @AcademyofHistoricalFencing 3 дні тому

      As a rule the covering of lines in this way is best described as you strike them with the foible was covering their weapon with your forte. Sometimes this means you need to reduce reach slightly to give yourself coverage. Simply put, the tip of the sword strikes the opponent and the first half of your blade should be directed towards wherever their blade is to proviide protection. Sometimes this will give opposition to them, but other times it will not and simply be in place ready to resist any counters.

      @@AcademyofHistoricalFencing Okay, and what if I have a weapon that has no hand protection like a stick? would I still be able to cover the line with it in the same way you just described? • @AcademyofHistoricalFencing
      @AcademyofHistoricalFencing День тому

      Make use of all of the training videos by a wide variety of instructors across UA-cam. Try and get to some events ot do workshops. You could start a study group to begin with. That is how many clubs start, just likemidned people meeting up to try and work on things. These often evolve into a full club. Ultimately you don't need a vast amount of experience to start a club, you mainly need a positive outlook and a sensible approach to safety. A lot can be learned along the way.

    brilliant display here coming from the straight rapier vs katana. True 2 heavens style would be slightly different and I believe more effective. Speaking from the katana side, it is key to maximize the advantages and push the disadvantages. At distance all advantage is rapier. So katana has to focus on closing. You can tell rapier wants to mostly use long hand naturally and keep spacing. Katana counter quite effective but mixing in stronger parry hits preemptively and closing distance gives Katana advantage while invariably rendering rapier useless. Every Katana attack whether off the counter or preemptive parry should always be followed with closing space. Make Rapier use dagger hand inside vs wakizashi.
